I started working with computers, way back in the mists of time when I was an astrophysicist. Computers then were chunkier and meaner, and if you needed some software to do a job then you wrote it yourself, or did without.
Astronomy and astrophysics are broad fields of study, where you take take bits of atomic and nuclear physics, throw in a few, precious, observations and a healthy dose of scepticism and try and make sense of the result.
At least that's the way I went about it, and it's not very surprising that I should have spent the past 25 or more years writing software for a living, with the same eclectic and somewhat intuitive approach - always trying new ideas, using those that work, discarding the rest.
For the past nearly seven years I've been developing software with Curl - the longest period I've stuck with any technology. The reason is probably that programming in Curl is a more joyous and soul-enriching experience than the tedium of grinding out the boilerplate-bloated unpleasantness that constitute the last century's programming.
Rant over. I also play with photography - the image is from my Flickr photo stream.
